How to Locate a Specific Month within a Volume Linked Above:

When trying to find one specific month within a full volume scan, a few specific (and somewhat eccentric!) clues can be very helpful.

  1. Pages run consecutively through volumes, so if you happen to know the page number you're looking for, that is usually quite easy to scroll through and locate.

  2. However, even without a page number, you can determine where individual monthly issues/numbers begin and end by looking carefully for markings in the bottom margin.

  3. First, determine the Volume and Number of the month you are looking for. So, for example, if you were looking for the EDM for August 1863, the index table above would show Series 2, Volume 7 includes Numbers 37-42, with August 1863 as Number 40, chronologically.

  4. Next, click the link (or multiple links, if offered) to view that volume, scrolling carefully. In the lower left corner of the first page of each month, there's usually a small printer's mark. For example, for August 1863, (which begins on p. 145 of its volume), you can see the following mark: No. 40, Vol. VII.

  5. This shows you are on the first page for August 1863. Even in volumes where covers, advertisements, and peripherals have been stripped out, this marginal note indicates where individual months begin (and by deduction, end).

Happy investigating!
